Do Sleep Masks Actually Improve Sleep?

A sleep mask can be a practical way to reduce light reaching your eyes. Whether it helps you feel more rested depends on your surroundings, fit and comfort. Research does not justify promising that every mask improves sleep, raises melatonin or produces the same result for everyone.

What does eye-mask research show?

A 2023 study by Greco and colleagues reported improvements in some next-day learning and alertness measures after participants wore eye masks overnight. Those outcomes should not be treated as proof of deeper sleep or as a test of a particular silk mask. You can read the original study in Sleep.

A published reanalysis questioned how clear and consistent those benefits were. Taken together, this is a reason to keep expectations modest. These papers do not establish a health benefit for SilkSilQ products.

When might a mask be useful?

Consider a mask when you want less light around your eyes: during travel, in a shared room or when sleeping during daylight. It is a portable alternative or addition to room-darkening curtains. If your room is already dark, comfort may matter more to your choice than adding another layer of light coverage.

Does the material determine how much light it blocks?

Look at the whole construction. Fabric, internal layers and gaps around the nose or edges all contribute to coverage. A silk label alone does not tell you how a mask will fit your face. Compare the product's construction and adjustment method, and avoid assuming one shape works for everyone.

How is the SilkSilQ mask constructed?

Our mask has a 22-momme mulberry silk face and lining, cotton batting and an internal blackout layer. Its strap adjusts around the back of the head. This is a flat wraparound design, rather than a mask with recessed eye cups, and it may touch your eyelids and lashes.

The silk fabric is covered by OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification and tested for harmful substances. That statement concerns the silk fabric; it is not evidence of improved sleep or a separate certification of the complete mask.

How should a mask fit?

Adjust it until it feels secure without pressure on your eyes. Check the fit while lying in your usual sleeping position. Loosen or remove it if it feels uncomfortable. Light leakage and overnight staying power can vary with face shape, hair and movement.

How do I keep it clean?

Follow the care label and wash when needed, especially after contact with skincare or perspiration. Use a silk-safe detergent, rinse gently and let the mask dry fully before wearing it. See the silk care guide for the full routine.
